> Full-back Daniel Muñoz signed for Palace from Belgian side K.R.C. Genk having built a reputation across the continent for combining his defensive duties with an attacking prowess going forwards.

Born in Amalfi, a modest town with a population of just over 22,000 in the Antioquia Department in north-east Colombia, Daniel Muñoz’s journey to the Premier League encapsulates the versatility, commitment, and passion he has become renowned for as a player.

Growing up near to Medellín – the second-largest city in Colombia – Muñoz’s boyhood team were Atlético Nacional, his local club and the nation’s most successful side. Pictures would later emerge on social of a teenage Muñoz in the stands, shirtless and roaring his Atlético heroes.

Starting out as a player at the nearby Cosmos Soccer School as a six-year-old, Muñoz moved to Envigado at 12 years of age – the youth department which has produced the likes of James Rodriguez, Freddy Guarín and Jhon Cordoba – before moving to Arco Zaragoza Medellin, one of the most famous amateur teams in Colombia.

But despite a handful of trials elsewhere, including reports of interest abroad, Muñoz reached the age of 20 without having made his professional breakthrough, and was reputedly forced to consider retirement.

Yet Muñoz persisted briefly turned out for regional club, FC Total Soccer, where his displays alerted him to Jose Fernando Salazar – a scout from top-flight club Águilas Doradas – who would later recruit the defender in early 2017.

Muñoz rose quickly to the challenges of the professional game, quickly becoming one of Águilas Doradas’ most important players and making 37 appearances in his first season.

Catching the eye during three years in Rionegro, he played 94 times and scored three goals from full-back – and would fulfil his lifelong dream when coach Juan Carlos Osorio signed him up for Atlético Nacional in 2019.

Once more, his impact was immediate, and before Muñoz had even reached double figures for appearances for Nacional, he had been called up by Colombia coach Carlos Quieroz for friendly matches against Brazil and Venezuela in September 2019, only denied his international debut by injury.

Scoring a remarkable seven goals in 20 league games in his maiden year, Muñoz was named Nacional captain at the age of 23, just six months after joining the club.

He opted to pursue his dream of playing in Europe at four-time Belgian champions K.R.C. Genk – rebuilding after a challenging campaign – ahead of the 2020/21 season, and Muñoz was once again quick to find his feet, starting out in midfield before coming to dominate the right-back position in the team.

The defender played in every one of Genk’s Jupiler Pro League fixtures in his debut year, picking up five assists as his new club bounced back from a seventh-place finish the previous season to mount a title challenge and finish second. The following season, he would help Genk win the Belgian Cup.

After two previous call-ups, Muñoz’s Colombia debut finally arrived in June 2021 in a World Cup qualifier against Peru.

Muñoz remained with the squad ahead of the 2021 Copa América finals in Brazil that month, playing the full 90 minutes in five of his country’s seven games – keeping three clean sheets – as Colombia missed out on a spot in the final after losing to Lionel Messi's Argentina on penalties, but then defeated Peru to finish third.

Last season, 2022/23, was his best in front of goal, as he scored seven times and registered seven assists in just 30 games. He departed Genk having made 148 appearances in all competitions (including 18 in European competition), scoring 19 goals and 20 assists in total.

In his first half-season in red and blue, Muñoz made 14 appearances and recorded four assists. He also scored his first goal for Colombia in a friendly against Spain in March 2023.

Muñoz carried his strong form in red and blue into the 2024 Copa America, where he and fellow Palace teammate Jefferson Lerma finished as runners-up. He opened the scoring for Los Cafeteros in the tournament in a 2-1 win against Paraguay and went on to net a the equaliser in a draw against Brazil and also register an assist in the quarter-final victory over Panama.

In November 2024, Muñoz scored his first ever goal for Palace in some style. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, he headed home a cross from captain Marc Guéhi at the far post to equalise Newcastle United at Selhurst Park, prompting wild celebrations which manager Oliver Glasner also got involved in.

The 40-year-old joins Palace following an impressive two-year spell in charge of Scottish Women's Premier League side Rangers and a stint as assistant manager at Birmingham City. 

During her time in Glasgow, Potter won a cup double in both of her seasons in charge, delivering four trophies in total.

Prior to her managerial career, Potter won 35 caps playing for England over 13 years. She scored three goals on the international stage and was part of the Lionesses squad which finished third at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Featuring predominantly as a creative left-sided midfielder, Potter represented the likes of Birmingham, where she won the Women’s FA Cup; Arsenal; Charlton Athletic; Everton; and Reading, before retiring from playing in 2021.

These follow a distinguished playing career which saw Potter win 35 caps for England, finishing third at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, and claim silverware at a number of top-level clubs including Birmingham and Arsenal.

**Read on for Potter’s first Palace TV interview in full, including words on what brought her to the club, her immediate plans for the team, her coaching philosophy, and her message to the Palace Women’s supporters…**

**Welcome to Crystal Palace, Jo! How excited are you to be here?**

I'm extremely excited. I'm extremely honoured to be able to come in, and try to hit the ground running.

**What are your plans for your first couple of weeks?**

It's full steam ahead really. I think it's about getting to know the people around the building, introducing myself to the players, having good conversations with the players, knowing the ins and outs and how things work.

It's really important to get a really good feel of the place that you're going to be working in, first and foremost, and the people that are around it. We want to make it a really nice environment to come in working day in, day out, knowing what the players need, knowing what my staff needs, knowing what we need to do to go on and make this season successful. 

**How will your experiences as a top-level player and manager help you going into this new role?**

I've always coached. I've always had an aspiration to be a manager. I always wanted to make sure that I'd done my hard graft.

I wanted to make sure I'd got my experience while I was playing, did all my badges and coached, got my experience while I was a professional footballer. I thought that was really important.

I really still try to keep my ‘player head’ on me quite a bit, to know what the players are thinking and how they're feeling, what they maybe need, but the last couple of years have been great for me at Rangers, to really go and learn my trade, and learn what it takes to be at a really big football club that demands success, that demands you win trophies. I've really enjoyed my time at Rangers. I've got a lot to thank them for.

It’s a fresh start for me, a really big challenge at a really big club with some special players, and we're hoping that we can hit the ground running and continue that success hopefully.

**What is it which attracted you to Crystal Palace, and which made you want to take this club forward?**

Just having conversations with the people at the club. It was important that I know the ambitions of the club. I had a really good conversation with \[Chairman\] Steve \[Parish\] and about how important the women's team are to him and his aspirations. 

You can just see that it's a real footballing club, which loves football, wants to do well, and have got real big ambitions for the club. With how well the men's team have done this year with the FA Cup success, you could see how much it meant to the club itself.

It's really important that we know where the women's game is at, we know where we're sitting at, and we know where we want to be.

It's a massive place to be right now. I think you could see how hard it is to sustain WSL status and how hard it is to get promoted, so we really want to make sure that we've got the network and the environment right to be able to get back to where this club deserves \[to be\], and really make it work because the infrastructure's here, the grounds are brilliant, the training facilities are brilliant, everything's there to be able to do it.

It's just making sure that we get everything right, make it sustainable and hopefully have a really bright future.

**Tell us a little bit about yourself as a manager.**

There's always a fine line of being a manager and being somebody there who can really help the players, but I think those relationships are massive for your day-in, day-out, and making sure that the players get what they need.

I'm always there. It's important that the players know that win, lose or draw, there's always a knock on the door and you can always come to me, and I'm always a human being first. I think that's key when you're in a team environment and you want to win.

So human being first, make sure that the players know that I'm always available should they need to come and speak to me, and I'm definitely a hands-on coach on the pitch. I love to be in and about it, and making sure that we're putting in the right intensity and the right work, definitely.

**What do you look for from a team which you manage? What type of style or philosophy do you like to implement?**

It's important to know that there are different ways to win, and adaptability is key for me.

Whoever we're playing against, we'll give them the utmost respect, but a lot of my philosophy is around us and what we look like and what we do really well, what we need to improve on. That's what we're going to do day-to-day, and it's really key that the players know that, the players buy into the way of playing.

I think the players have got to enjoy playing a certain way, so I'll be hoping to bring that intensity to it. That's one thing that I do like: an intense day-to-day environment, making sure that the games are easier than training.

I like to play with the ball, I like to possess the ball a lot, but I think there's a definite way to win and if that's making sure that we're utilising our pace, we're utilising our width or we're utilising our build-up play, then that's used for that game, and that's important to know because you're not just going to see one set style from me all season.

There are different ways to win, and I think we need to give the opposition some respect, so the players are going to learn a lot.

I think it's adaptability, playing a few different formations, making sure opponents can't really work us out, that's a key thing for us, and being able to adapt within games and mix up our game so we become unpredictable, and hopefully be able to bring the players along the way and learn a thing or two.

**Finally, what’s your message to the incredible Crystal Palace Women’s fanbase?**

The fans are going to be key to us. They’re going to be super important. You see what a difference they can make, and bring you that extra five, ten percent to every single game.

We want to see you turn up, we want to see you bring the noise, and we want to see you support the team because we're going to need it.

We're going to fight, and we're going to fight with you, and for you, so it's key to turn up every single week and give us your best.

An England stalwart who has since become one of the most exciting young managers in the country; it’s time to meet the new manager of Crystal Palace women.

Jo Potter has joined the Eagles following a highly successful two-year stint in charge of Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers.

Here is Potter’s journey so far, from a Women's World Cup in Canada, to an array of silverware north of the border.

Originally from Mansfield, Potter began her footballing career at the Chesterfield centre of excellence, before crossing the border into South Yorkshire to join Sheffield Wednesday at the age of 17.

From there she impressed Birmingham City, joining in 2003, for the first of three spells with the Blues.

Potter also represented England for the first time at an international tournament, in the 2003 Under-19s European Championships. Alongside future Lionesses such as Alex Scott, Fara Williams and Eni Aluko, she featured in a talented team who reached the semi-final stage.

Her first caps for the senior team followed in 2004, with Potter featuring in back-to-back friendlies against the Netherlands in the England midfield.

With her early promise putting her on the radar of other clubs, Potter moved to the all-conquering Arsenal team for the following season. The Gunners won both the FA Cup and the Women’s Premier League that season, Potter coming off the bench in the final win of the former – a 3-0 success against Charlton.

However, as she was unable to secure a regular starting spot with the North London side she moved back to Birmingham the following summer. 

After spending time at various clubs including Charlton Athletic, Everton and Leicester City, a third return to the Blues in 2011 led to one of best spells of Potter’s career.

Moving into a more central role, the midfielder made over 100 appearances in total for the Blues across five years. This included the highlight of her domestic career, starting in midfield as Birmingham twice came from behind to win the FA Cup with a penalty shootout at Ashton Gate.

The resurgence at Birmingham saw Potter back in the England squad in 2014, returning for a 4-0 win over Sweden in Hartlepool.

Then England manager Mark Sampson would subsequently select Potter for the Lionesses squad at the 2015 FIFA World Cup in Canada.

The midfielder started – and excelled – in the 1-0 third-place play-off win over rivals Germany, which secured a bronze medal and was regarded as a major breakthrough for the England team.

She would remain part of the regular Lionesses squad over the next two years and would also go to the European Championships in Netherlands in 2017, where England would once again reach the semi-finals before losing to the host nation.

After spells in the WSL with both Notts County and Reading towards the latter stages of her career, Potter would call time on her playing days in January 2021 aged 36.

Later admitting she had always had her sights set on coaching post-football, Potter was assistant manager at former club Birmingham, working alongside Darren Carter.

After just a year in that role she was selected by Rangers to become the new manager at the Scottish giants – and would deliver silverware in her very first season.

Playing a vibrant style of football, Potter led the Blue Belles to both the Scottish Cup and League Cup in the 2023/24 season.

In fact, she was only a point away from completing a remarkable domestic treble. Celtic and Rangers both finished level on 82 points – but the green half of Glasgow took the title on goal difference.

Potter’s side again impressed last season, losing just five league games all season. However, they were again denied the championship on the final day for a second straight year, with Hibernian finishing top.

The cups were a different story. Rangers thrashed Hibs 5-0 in the final of the League Cup in March, before a 3-0 win over Glasgow City confirmed a cup ‘double double’ for the Blue Belles.

Potter arrives in South London with a strong track record of success – both as a player, and now as a manager.

She’ll now be looking to lead the Eagles to a successful campaign in the 2025/26 WSL2, her first managerial role in English football.
